Our Verdict
The A3 delivers Audi's premium quality in a compact, practical package. The 8V (2012–2020) is the sweet spot — mature, well-proven, and available with excellent TFSI and TDI engines. Build quality is outstanding and the S3 is a truly special performance car.
Introduction
Audi's A3 has been quietly brilliant since 1996, but the 8V generation (2012–2020) truly established it as the premium compact benchmark. Available as Sportback, Saloon, and Cabriolet, the A3 offers Audi's signature interior quality and quattro all-wheel drive capability.
The latest 8Y (2020–present) brings a more assertive design and digital-first interior. Under the skin, the A3 shares its MQB platform with the VW Golf, which means proven mechanicals and relatively affordable parts.
However, Audi pricing means you'll pay a premium over the equivalent Golf for what is essentially the same car underneath.
