Our Verdict
The Astra offers solid family hatchback motoring at a lower price than the Golf or Focus. The Astra K (2015–2021) was a significant improvement over the heavy Astra J. The new Astra L (2022+) on the Stellantis platform is genuinely competitive with the class leaders for the first time.
Introduction
The Vauxhall Astra has been a mainstay of the UK family car market since the 1980s. The Astra J (2009–2015) was competent but heavy and dated. The Astra K (2015–2021) shed 200kg and gained a much-improved interior and engine range. The Astra L (2022–present) on the Stellantis EMP2 platform is the best Astra ever made.
As a used buy, the Astra offers excellent value. Heavy depreciation means you get a lot of car for the money, and running costs are lower than premium alternatives. The Astra K in particular represents a sweet spot of modern design, decent dynamics, and rock-bottom prices.
Just don't expect the driving excitement of a Focus or the build quality of a Golf — the Astra plays a different game, prioritising value and practicality.
