Nissan Qashqai Buying Guide 2025

Nissan 2014–2025 SUV Score: 77/100
77 / 100

Our Verdict

The Qashqai invented the crossover segment and remains one of the UK's most popular cars. The J11 (2014–2021) is a solid, practical choice with excellent resale values. The J12 (2021+) added e-POWER hybrid technology and a much-improved interior. Watch for CVT gearbox reliability on the J11.

📋 Introduction

The Nissan Qashqai pioneered the crossover SUV segment when it launched in 2007, and it has remained one of the UK's bestselling cars ever since. Built in Sunderland, the Qashqai combines the elevated driving position of an SUV with the running costs of a family hatchback.

The second generation J11 (2014–2021) refined the formula with better materials, more space, and a wider engine range. The third generation J12 (2021–present) introduced Nissan's unique e-POWER hybrid system and a genuinely premium interior.

As a used buy, the Qashqai is hugely popular, which means strong residual values but also plentiful supply. The J11 represents excellent value for a practical family car.

⚠️ Known Issues & Common Problems

CVT gearbox failure (J11)

High Risk

The Xtronic CVT can develop juddering, hesitation, and in severe cases, complete failure. Nissan extended the warranty on some models. Ensure the CVT fluid has been changed at 60,000 miles. Budget £2,000–£3,500 for replacement.

When to check: 60,000+ miles

Turbo failure (1.2 DIG-T)

Medium Risk

The 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol engine can suffer turbo failures at higher mileages. Listen for whining or excessive smoke. Replacement £800–£1,200.

When to check: 70,000+ miles

Panoramic roof seal leaks

Medium Risk

Cars with panoramic sunroofs can develop seal leaks, leading to water ingress in the headliner. Check for damp patches or musty smell.

When to check: Any age with pano roof

Rear suspension spring breakage

Medium Risk

Coil spring breakage is reported more frequently than average. Check for clunking from the rear. Budget £200–£350 per side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally reliable with the main concern being CVT gearbox longevity on the J11. Manual models are more dependable. The J12 with e-POWER has fewer known issues so far.
The Sportage is more spacious, has a longer warranty, and is better to drive. The Qashqai is more refined, has better residual values, and is available with e-POWER hybrid technology.
If buying a J11, the manual gearbox is more reliable and cheaper to maintain. If you want an automatic, budget for potential CVT issues and ensure the fluid has been changed.
e-POWER is a unique hybrid where a petrol engine generates electricity to power electric motors that drive the wheels. The car drives like an EV (smooth, instant torque) but doesn't need plugging in. Range and refuelling are the same as a normal petrol car.
