Our Verdict
The A-Class brought Mercedes luxury to the premium hatchback segment. The W177 (2018+) is a genuinely impressive car with an industry-leading interior and MBUX voice control. The older W176 is less refined but offers Mercedes badge appeal at bargain prices. Watch for dual-clutch gearbox issues on W176.
Introduction
Mercedes entered the premium hatchback market with the W176 A-Class in 2012, and the W177 (2018βpresent) took it to another level entirely. The W177's interior, dominated by the dual-screen MBUX system, set a new benchmark that rivals are still trying to match.
The W176 was a competent car but never quite matched the dynamic ability of the BMW 1 Series or Audi A3. The W177 closed that gap significantly while adding space, refinement, and technology in abundance.
Used A-Class values are attractive, particularly on W176 models. A well-specified W177 A200 represents outstanding value against a new mainstream hatchback.
