Our Verdict
A premium hatchback with genuine BMW character. The F20 (rear-wheel drive) is more engaging; the F40 (front-wheel drive) is more practical. Both offer badge appeal and quality that mainstream rivals can't match. Watch for N47 chain issues on older diesels.
Introduction
The BMW 1 Series offers premium hatchback motoring with genuine rear-wheel drive character (F20, 2011β2019) or refined front-wheel drive practicality (F40, 2019βpresent). It's the entry point to BMW ownership and a compelling alternative to the Golf and A3.
The F20 is a purist's choice β rear-wheel drive in a hatchback is rare, and the M135i/M140i are modern classics. The F40 switched to front-wheel drive controversially, but gained significantly in interior space and refinement.
Used values have fallen sharply on F20 models, making them excellent value. A well-specified 118i or 120d can be had for the price of a new Corsa.
